Page Text ---------- It's the Law State and federal laws prohibit any person to wiretap or intercept a telephone call without prior consent of one or both parties participating in the call. Properly authorized law enforcement officers may take part in interceptions without prior consent when proceeding under court orders issued according to federal or state laws. The penalty for illegal wiretapping can be imprisonment and/or a fine. Obscene & Harassing Phone Calls State laws prohibit individuals from making obscene or harassing calls. Severe fines and terms of imprisonment may be applicable to those convicted for violations to these laws. How to Handle Obscene or Harassing Calls If you receive an obscene, harassing or threatening call, follow these suggestions: Hang up at the first obscene word or if the caller doesn't respond after the second "Hello." Do not give any information such as your name or address until the caller has been identified. Advise your children not to give information to strangers. If you are not home, teach your children to say, "My mom/dad cannot come to the phone right now" if someone calls. If calls persist, call your business office or the Police Department. Telephone Service Observing Equipment This company or firm has been licensed by the Georgia Public Service Commission to use service observing equipment pursuant to Georgia Codes Annotated Section 26-3005. Telephone Safety The telephone and the system serving you can generally be regarded as safe to use. There are however a few situations in which telephone users need to be cautious. The telephone should not be used while you are in the bathtub, shower or pool. Immersion of the telephone or handset in water could cause an electrical shock. You should avoid using a telephone during an electrical storm. Urgent calls should be brief. Although the telephone industry uses protective devices to limit abnormal electrical surges from entering your home, absolute protection is not possible. There is always a slight chance of a dangerous electrical shock from lightning when using the telephone during an electrical storm. If you think you have found a gas leak, do not use the telephone in the vicinity of the leak until it is repaired. The telephone contains electrical contacts that could generate a tiny spark and trigger an explosion if the gas concentration is high enough. You should go to another location to report the leak. Your children need to know how to use the phone in an emergency. Teach them how to dial the numbers shown on the first page of this book. Also make sure they know their home telephone number and address. Georgia Do Not Call List Georgia residential consumers who want to reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls from telephone solicitors trying to get you to purchase, rent or invest in property, goods or services are encouraged to register with the free Federal Do Not Call Registry. Consumers are placed on the Georgia Do Not Call List free of charge simply by registering their phone numbers with the Federal Registry. You may register your phone number with the federal list online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free, 1-888-382-1222, TTY 1-866-290-4236 from the number you wish to register. While being on the Do Not Call Registry may significantly reduce the number of unwanted solicitations you receive, it will not prevent you from receiving calls from: (1) Businesses that have an established relationship with you. An established relationship exists if you have purchased, leased or rented goods or services from the business within 18 months preceding the call, or if you have submitted an application or made an inquiry to the business within the three months preceding the call; "No Call" List Customer Information (2) Recognized charitable or religious organizations; or (3) Political pollsters or candidates for public office. Federal law requires telemarketers to search the Registry every 31 days and synchronize their call lists with the phone numbers that are on the Registry. If you receive telemarketing calls after you have registered your telephone number and it has been in the Registry for 31 days, you can file a complaint at DONOTCALL.GOV or by calling 1-888-382-1222, TTY 1-866-290-4236. You will have to know the company's name or phone number to file a "do not call" complaint. 10 REVISION DATE: January 2010
